Introduction

To implement educational philosophy of integrity, responsibility, professional and foresight, Center of General Studies has been founded in Oct. 2000. It highly values well-balanced student repertoires of humanities and technology and it draws up curriculum plans for all of general study courses and related matters of teaching development. The center consists of a director and 31 full-time teachers. Curricula, in terms of MOE standards and the school status quo, are categorized into humanities, arts, social science, nature science, fundamental medicine, gyms and leisure sports. Based these curricula, teachers in the respects are divided into five groups with a chairman each. The chairman is in charge of curriculum arrangement, exchange of teaching experiences, and the other services regarded to instructions. In the future, the center will encourage teachers to engage themselves in advance studies, researches, and promotion so as to enhance faculty structures and further, to upgrade teaching methodologies and facilities. We improve teaching quality and curriculum contents to attain the goal of integrating general studies into professions and of developing professionals with sound personality.

Implementing Plans

1.   Versatile courses of general studies

            Along with societal change, the center focuses on localizing and globalizing, professionalizing and generalizing, and incorporating characteristics of departments of nursing, childcare, visual communication, MIS, business administration and applied foreign languages. On the basis of school educational philosophy, the center involves a series of courses of general studies as follows:

l         Humanities and arts—there are the relative courses such as religions, philosophy, literature, music, arts, culture, language, humanities.

l         Social science—it contains mathematics, statistics, health care, astronomy, biology, global science, ecology, physics, and chemistry.

l         Fundamental medicine—it refers to physiology, pathology, microbiology, immunity, and nutrition.

l         Gym, leisure sports—it involves sport physiology, psychology, biological   , marketing and administration, medicine, science, health care, statistics, leisure and management.

 

 

 

2. Modernized methodologies of instructions

The center stresses the modernized methodologies of instructions to keep up with the tendency of the tech-oriented age.

l         Regularly host conferences or workshops for exchange of teaching experiences and teaching methodologies. In addition, the center applies the latest information and knowledge to continuously improve teaching quality.

l         Strengthen teacher’s capability of using modernized teaching equipments like projectors and digital cameras to stimulate vivid and motivating instruction.

l         Build up teacher’s capabilities of using modernized computer equipments and teaching software along with the long-term plan of e-learning. This is followed by the goal of internet and distance instruction.

 

 

3. Delicate achievements of researches

The center encourages teachers to do researches by setting up easier access to publication and by developing a research environment. Ultimately, we will improve teacher quality and research abilities.

l         Encourage teachers to sign up for international or domestic conferences or symposiums. The aim in the aspect is to attain the exchange of cross-college resources, research achievements, research methods.

l         Motivate teachers to apply for academic rewards or funds from National Science Committee or from other academic funding institutes.

l         Collect and sort out teacher’s research papers for publication.

l         Host academic conferences to provide various accesses to publication so as to enhance the quality of research outcomes.

 

4. Reasonable structures of faculty

To implement the plan of promoting our college to a technology institute, the center actively improves the current structure of faculty.

l         Recruit teachers with doctoral degree as associate and assistant professors.

l         Encourage teachers to gain doctoral degrees via advance studies, or to get promoted through research innovation or publication in order to change the present structure of faculty.
